Sew N Sustain: A Celebration with Community Keeping Well

I had the honour of giving a speech at the Community Keeping Well mid-year celebration an uplifting event that highlighted the impact of local projects working to support the health and well-being of Tower Hamlets residents. It was a proud moment to share the journey of my sewing project, Sew N Sustain, and reflect on how much it has grown since it began in May.
What started with just two learners has developed into a successful and engaging class with eight regular participants. The project has received strong feedback and support from the community, and the growing interest has even led to a waiting list. In my speech, I spoke about the positive impact Sew N Sustain is having not just in teaching sewing skills, but in creating a welcoming space where individuals can connect, build confidence, and feel part of something meaningful.
As part of the celebration, I was honoured to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from Community Keeping Well for leading a community project and supporting the well-being of Tower Hamlets residents. It was a deeply rewarding moment that recognised the passion, time, and dedication poured into the work I do.
As Sew N Sustain continues to grow, I look forward to reaching more people, building on our success, and continuing to support our community.

Cambridge Heath Community Voting Day Event
I am so excited to share my journey with you! I recently had the incredible opportunity to take part in Community Keeping Well, where I pitched my idea for Sew ‘n’ Sustain a sewing project created to support Tower Hamlets residents in Cambridge Heath who may be struggling with mental health challenges and isolation.
This project is so close to my heart because I know how tough it can be to feel alone, to struggle in silence, and to crave a sense of connection. If you’ve ever felt isolated or overwhelmed, please know you’re not alone. I truly believe that creativity and community can be powerful tools for healing.
Sewing isn’t just about fabric and stitches it’s about rebuilding confidence, finding joy in creativity, and connecting with others. Through Sew ‘n’ Sustain, you will have the opportunity to learn everything from basic sewing skills to pattern making, dressmaking, and sustainable fashion practices. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone looking to develop new skills, this project is designed to be a safe, welcoming space where we can all grow together.
I am beyond grateful that you my community believed in this vision and voted for Sew ‘n’ Sustain. Your support means the world to me, and I can’t wait to get started.

The British Bangladeshi Fashion Council's Inspire Fashion 2024 was a night of innovation, culture, and sustainability. Among the standout pieces, a breathtaking garment designed by Shabana Begum stole the show, seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with modern eco-conscious design.
Shabana has beautifully blended sustainable satin fabric with the cultural essence of the traditional ghamcha. Sourcing eco-friendly satin, Shabana ensures a luxurious look while minimising environmental impact. The addition of the ghamcha, with its classic checkered cotton, offers a striking contrast and infuses the garment with a rich cultural narrative. This piece exemplifies Shabana's commitment to sustainability while honouring her roots, resulting in a garment that is both elegant and mindful.
Shabana’s masterpiece proved that sustainability and high fashion can go hand in hand. As it graced the runway, the audience was captivated not just by its elegance, but by its powerful message of responsible fashion.
The night reinforced a vital shift in the industry: style and sustainability are the future. Shabana’s shows topping design wasn’t just a moment it was a movement.
